Multinational business executives perceive Ghana as the gateway to West Africa.
With the economic integration agenda in the sub-region, which will result in
a common market with a unified currency, more multinational business houses
are seriously considering making Ghana the headquarters for their operations
in West Africa. The sub-region has a population of approximately 300 million
people and hence the market for businesses even located in Ghana above will
not only be limited to the country’s population of approximately 20 million
but to the people of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
The Government is committed to reducing poverty in Ghana through its Ghana
Poverty Reduction Strategy (GPRS). The Government is of the view that the most
effective way of achieving this objective is through the creation of wealth
and it is therefore embarking on various actions to create and support a strong
private sector.
A specific ministry has been set up for this purpose and with the support of
certain development partners, it is currently embarking on various initiatives
to strengthen the capacities and capabilities in various ministries and organizations
as a support for the private sector growth. Under the Government’s slogan
of “Golden Age of Business” it is actively encouraging foreign direct
investment, deregulation and liberalization of new investment opportunities
in the mining, agriculture, telecommunications and transport sectors. The potential
to be successful is limitless and there is now a constant stream of business
executives into the country to explore the abundant opportunities.
All visitors to Ghana, both business executives and tourists, acknowledge the
friendliness of its citizens. The country is also endowed with well educated
and hardworking people. There is a very good, sound labour relations climate
in the country. Capital markets are now developing and commercial regulations
are under constant review with the objective of promulgating sound effective
commercial laws to facilitate the smooth running of a dynamic private sector.
